During my recent trip to Hong Kong for the annual clock & watch fair, I happened to visit the Mongkok shopping district, a place teeming with goods of every sort, as well as fortune tellers, food stands, and tea houses.
This is among the most densely populated areas of the planet. Guinness Book of World Records describes Mongkok as the busiest shopping district in the world.
It’s also home to one of the best microbrand showrooms in the world - The Watchdrobe, where NTH watches can now be seen and purchased, I’m very pleased to announce.
The Watchdrobe proprietor Jason Ng and I took time to sit down and get acquainted during my visit. His entry into the watch world was serendipitous, but his keen eye and research-driven approach to brand selection has made The Watchdrobe a destination boutique for watch enthusiasts visiting Hong Kong.
Jason’s story - After graduating from college, Jason started having job interviews and decided to buy a watch to make him look a little smarter (in the British sense of the word).
Like many who are new to watches, he only knew a few big-name brands. A bit of online exploration led him to the ever-expanding universe of micro brands, and the excitement of finding high quality watches produced by passionate people.
Asking around, most people he spoke to had never heard of micro-brands, but loved the pieces he showed them. Knowing Mongkok was a mecca for shopping, but lacked any representation for micro-brands, he soon quit his full-time job and launched The Watchdrobe.
In his words, “I wanted to be the micro-brand pioneer in Hong Kong and not selling the same old brands that everyone knew. I was selling excellent watches at a fair price. What more could I ask? I love my job.”
If you visit Hong Kong, be sure to visit The Watchdrobe, to see NTH and other brands.
